Telkom LTE Coverage in South Africa

What LTE coverage actually means, why it matters before you order, and how to check it at your exact location.

What Telkom LTE Coverage Means

Telkom LTE coverage refers to the geographic areas where Telkom's 4G/LTE mobile network signal is available. Coverage is delivered from cell towers, and signal strength decreases the further you are from the nearest tower, and the more obstacles (buildings, hills, trees) are in the way.

Having "coverage" at an address doesn't guarantee a specific speed — it means a usable signal is present. Speed and reliability still depend on distance from the tower, network load at that time, and the capabilities of your device.

Why Check Coverage Before You Order

A mobile data SIM only works where Telkom LTE signal reaches. If you order a SIM without checking coverage first, you risk poor performance — or no signal at all — at the location where you actually plan to use it. This is especially important if you're buying data for a specific use case, like a holiday home, workshop or rural property.

Always check coverage at the actual locations where you'll use the device — not just your home address, if you plan to use it elsewhere too (for travel, work, a second property, etc.).

Indoor vs Outdoor Signal

LTE signal is typically stronger outdoors than indoors, since building materials (especially concrete, brick and metal) can weaken the signal as it passes through walls. If your indoor signal is weak but you get good signal outside or near a window, that's usually the building construction affecting reception — not a fault with the SIM or device.

Coverage Plus Device Compatibility

Coverage is only half the equation. Even with strong network coverage at your location, your phone, tablet or MiFi device also needs to support Telkom's LTE frequency bands to connect. See our guide on compatible devices for details.

How to Check Your Coverage

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check Telkom LTE coverage at my address?
Use Dalkom's coverage checker or the Telkom network coverage map. Always check the specific locations where you plan to use the device, not just your home address.
Does coverage mean I'll get full speed everywhere?
No. Coverage means a signal is present, but actual speed depends on signal strength, distance from the tower, network congestion and the device you're using.
Why is my signal weaker indoors?
Walls, especially concrete, brick and metal-lined structures, can reduce LTE signal strength. If you get a good signal outdoors but a weak one indoors, try using the device near a window.
What if there's no Telkom LTE coverage at all?
If there's no coverage where you need it, a mobile data SIM won't work reliably there. Check coverage before ordering rather than after, to avoid this.
Does device compatibility affect coverage?
Yes. Even with strong network coverage, your device needs to support Telkom's LTE frequency bands to connect. See our guide on compatible devices.

Check Your Coverage, Then Order
